Woman Stabbed in Birmingham City Bus Stop Assault Succumbs to Injuries
The female victim who was stabbed to her neck area during a random assault at a bus stop within Birmingham has passed away, police have confirmed.
The deceased woman, aged 34 years, was targeted on Smallbrook Queensway street, just outside the Bullring shopping centre, just prior to 9 PM GMT on Friday, according to police statements.
The suspect, twenty-one, was presented at Birmingham Magistrates Court Monday morning, charged over the attack.
Originally charged with attempted murder however after the victim's passing charges were upgraded to include murder.
Police Response
Authorities stated officers would be in the downtown area on Monday providing public assurance, while detectives assisted the woman's family.
Detectives are appealing any eyewitnesses who might have observed the accused, identified as a Black British national, and is believed to have been wearing an all-grey tracksuit, black hat, trainers with a backpack.
Incident Location
The knife attack occurred outside Bullring retail complex, across from the main entrance to Birmingham New Street station.
Police said they classified it as a random violent act with investigators stating efforts continue to determine the motive behind.
Witness Accounts
An area worker, employed in the vicinity, described the emergency response when she finished her work period at about 22:00 Friday night.
She described the scene as "quite chaotic", adding that co-workers reported hearing a commotion at about 21:00.
"Many my colleagues use transit services, take the tram... our security is compromised fundamentally, in the downtown area."
Ashley Birks, twenty-five, from Stoke-on-Trent, said he came to Birmingham fairly regularly to see his girlfriend resident there, expressing concern about what had happened.
"It causes concern for my girlfriend," he said.
"She lacks transportation employed at all of the big music venues... considering a totally random act occurred, understandably, it's horrible."
